From the Archives: Flowers in Our Yard

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

These pretty blue flowers tell us each year that Spring has truly arrived. We have several areas on the upper side of our yard which are nearly impossible to mow because of rocks and tree roots. We have periwinkle growing there now, which keeps the weeds under control and gives us a pretty green and blue carpet each Spring.

This is an unusual color. My granddad grew them, and we enjoyed popping the seed pods.

The colour is lovely.

It is good to see the flowers before spring.

The first time I ever saw periwinkles was as a freshman in college where an area along side the library had a large patch of them. I had read of 'periwinkle blue' but had never before understood exactly what color it was. Blue is not one of my favorite colors, but this shade is almost purple, and very lovely. Nice photo, George. Thanks for the hint of Spring to come. It's supposed to snow 1"-2" here today.

We have a few of these little blue flowers in our yard, too. The inside is square! I must have looked them up, but I don't know what they are now.

Hi George. What a pretty little flower this is.

You left a comment on my Photoblog for today about the water being low in the Santa Clara River. Well George, that riverbed is totally dry 10 to 11 months out of the year and what you see in the photo is actually "a lot" of water for this riverbed. We live about 1/2 mile from this riverbed and we love to see it when there is water running.

Thanks for stopping by.
