Sempervivum Flowers

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

Hens and chickens are wonderful plants and we have them is several places in our yard. They will grow where other things won't and are beautiful succulents year round. Hens and chickens are sempervivum, which means live forever. But they don't. Before a hen dies, she will bloom as in the picture above. The hen will die, but there are hopefully many chicks to take her place.

My Gram had these in her garden. They ended up blooming and scattering and growing all over the back yard. I just loved the name.

Thanks for the reminder, George.

I didn't know hens and chicks flowered. I have had them for years and mine have never gotten flowers like that. I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

My grandmother had them as well. My aunt gave me a few for my own yard last year and I have even purchased some more. I really like them. Something different!

You have a good explaination on the name. I thought I have a similar one, but it is actually Ham 'n Eggs after re-confirmation.

How beautiful George. I had no ideal that the bloomed. I have never seen this happen. How many years did this take. Or maybe it is our difference in climate. Thanks for stopping by. Have a great week end.
