The Recumbent Lee

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

Last month I showed a picture of the Lee Chapel at Washington and Lee University, which was designed and built by Robert E. Lee while he was the college president.

The front of the chapel contains the memorial pictured above. It is a statue of a recumbent Lee at sleep on a battlefield. The memorial is directly above the crypt containing the remains of Lee and his family.

That sure is an interesting memorial!

I'm thinking Robert E. Lee must have been quite wealthy because the statue over the crypt reminds me of royalty (like in Europe). Is this a large building on the campus?

This gave me rather a atart when I first saw it. It's kind of creepy, but sure makes for a strange and unusual blog post!

I have a similar picture for Queen Victoria. This is such a nice way to remember a person. Making a marble statue. It like they never left.

Very nice photo and interesting as well!

He would probably have been buried at his wife's family home, had it not been commandeered as a final resting place -- Arlington National Cemetery.

I agree with EG - seems European style.

This is a most unusual memorial. Most have generals on horses and such, not asleep. I like it. And the sculpture itself is amazing — the cloth looks real!
