The Imperial Vault of Heaven

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

The Imperial Vault of Heaven is one of the major buildings in The Temple of Heaven near Beijing, China. The vault was built to contain memorial tablets of the ancestors of the emperor. According the ancient Chinese religious belief, heaven is round, and so the major buildings in the Temple of Heaven are also round.

The picture above was scanned from a slide.

How interesting that an ancient Chinese religion believed Heaven is round! That certainly helps to explain the conical design of this vault.

Now I know why their temples are round. China is one of the places I wish to visit someday.

Great shot of the temple George and informative comment. I learned that many houses in Africa are built round so that the demons do not have any corner to hide in. Interesting. BTW I love your new header.
