Carolina in the Evening

If you've visited here very often, you could be forgiven for coming to the conclusion that Betsy and I very much enjoy the mountains. These particular mountains are near Franklin, North Carolina. This picture was taken while sitting on the deck of a cabin in the early evening.

Nothing could be finer . . .

Colors on Monday: Green

When I think of 'green' I think of the Spring grass in our lawn, the new leaves coming out on the trees and the spring flowers growing in our flower beds.



The terraces of Bali showed different shades of green. (The picture above was scanned from a slide.)



But my favorite green is the green socks Betsy wore on our first visit to Fall Creek Falls when we were first dating back in 2001.

Nine Dragon Screen

The Nine Dragon Screen is the oldest and largest glazed screen in China. It was made over 600 years ago of 426 specially-designed glazed bricks and is about 149 feet long. It is in the Palace Museum (Forbidden City) in Beijing. The area in front of the screen was being renovated when this picture was taken.

Moon Over the Glade

We have a full moon over the Glade this week, but I'm cheating with this picture. I snapped this back in June on another clear night.

Remembering Our Daylilies (3)

I have already shared two collages of the daylilies in our yard (here and here). This is the last collage of our spring-blooming daylilies, but working in the yard Monday afternoon, I noticed that at least one daylily is going to bloom again. I can hardly wait.

L'Eau d'Or Falls

L'Eau d'Or Falls is one of five major waterfalls in Tallulah Gorge State Park in Georgia. This waterfall can only be viewed from the rim of the gorge, but is still very beautiful from that vantage point.

Colors on Monday: Yellow

Nothing says 'Spring' as nicely as a bright yellow daffodil blooming in the sun. This beauty is Brecks Colossal, and blooms in our front yard each spring.

Of course, we also have some yellow roses. When we got home from the beach this Spring we were welcomed by this rose, appropriately named Welcome Home.



This beauty is called New Day, an appropriate name I think.



Midas Touch is the yellow rose we've had longest.

Jackson's Headquarters

This house in Winchester, Virginia, was the headquarters of General Thomas J. ("Stonewall") Jackson, CSA, during the winter of 1861 - 62. At the time Jackson was in command of the Valley District of Virginia.

Remembering Our Daylilies (2)

Time flies when you're having fun! A couple of weeks ago I posted a collage of some of our daylilies. (You can see that collage by clicking here.) I had planned on posting a couple of additional collages before now, but they slipped my mind.

They're a little later than I originally planned, but here are more of the daylilies we've enjoyed in our yard.

The Interior of the Hall of Prayer

Yesterday's post showed the exterior of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. This picture, although not very good, shows a part of the interior.

There are 28 columns inside the hall, each made from a single tree trunk. The interior of the hall is unbelievably beautiful.

Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests

The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is an impressive three-tiered wooden structure that was built entirely without nails. Like all buildings in the Temple of Heaven it is round, like heaven in Chinese tradition.

Colors on Monday: Orange

Fortunately we have a rose with orange coloring -- Tahitian Sunset. This rose (pictured above) is now blooming for us in our front yard.



We saw orange in the sky last week when we were on our trip to celebrate Betsy's Birthday. This picture was taken as the sun was setting at the Peaks of Otter along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia.



But no post about the color orange would be complete without a picture of Big Orange's greatest fan. It's almost football time in Tennessee!!!

Peaks of Otter

We spent Betsy's birthday traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia on our way to the Lodge at Peaks of Otter. This picture was taken on Sharp Top, one of the peaks, the next morning. The lodge is beside the lake in the lower right of the picture and the Blue Ridge Parkway can also be seen. The day was hazy, but the view from the top of the mountain was still pretty spectacular.

Ruins of the Great Wall

When I was back in China in 1990, I saw a section of the Great Wall that was in ruins. In many ways the ruins were as impressive as the restored sections of the wall.

Trying to Stay Cool

Tuesday was another unbelievably hot and humid day here on the Plateau. This picture was taken in front of our house back on January 31. I hoped pictures like this would help me feel cooler, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Colors on Monday: Red

I realize that this is late, but I did want to take part in Jen's new mini meme.

This week's color is red, and I can't think of anything prettier than a beautiful red rose. The rose in the picture above is Ingrid Bergman, and is one of our new roses this year.

Technical Problems

Due to some technical problems it will probably be several days before I am able to post a new entry. I will do my best to keep up with you while I'm waiting to be able to post again.

Clear Creek Gorge

This picture of the Clear Creek gorge was taken from an overlook in the Obed Wild and Scenic River National Park here on the Plateau in Tennessee. The park is in a remote area, but the scenery makes the trip to get there very worthwhile.

Remembering Our Daylilies

Our daylilies are now a memory for this year, but they are a very pretty memory. These are some of the daylilies we enjoyed in our yard.

Morning at Druid Hills

The Druid Hills golf course is pretty just about any time of the year, even on a foggy summer morning. The fourteenth hole is the signature hole for this course. This picture was taken below the tee -- the green is on the other side of the pond.

Cumberland Mountain Dam and Bridge

The picture above was taken at Cumberland Mountain State Park in Crossville, Tennessee, last March. The dam and bridge was built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) in the 1930s and is the largest masonry project built by the CCC. The bridge was renovated in 2009.
I like the reflections in the lake.
