Kuta Beach, Bali

From 1985 to 1994 I taught Computer Science at Heidelberg College (now University) in Ohio.  During the summer of 1987 I was on a team of professors from the college that went to Tianjin, People’s Republic of China, to teach English at a Chinese University.

Because of the difference in calendars between the two schools our team had a couple of weeks of free time before beginning our teaching duties.  So we decided to spend a couple of days visiting Bali. None of us had ever been there before, but it sounded like a wonderful place to visit.  Since we were entering China through Hong Kong, Bali wasn’t that far out of our way.

Bali was everything we hoped it would be and then some.  I found myself fascinated by the sea and sky at the resort where we stayed.  The attached slide show contains images made from slides taken during that 1987 visit.  Some of the slides didn't scan as well as I would have preferred, bus by and large I am pleased with the way they came out.

If you  would like to see these and other images taken at Kuta Beach, along with a caption for each image, you can click HERE.

Bali Skies

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

I’ve been taking photos of the sky near sunset for more years than I care to mention.  This image is from a slide made in 1987 on the island of Bali.  An afternoon rain shower had passed over the place we were staying and the sun was beginning to break through the clouds.

Bali Stone Bridge

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

I was going through my archives when I came across this picture of this stone bridge.  This picture, scanned from a slide, was a drive by photo taken from a van as we traveled through the countryside of Bali back in 1987.  There is something about this bridge that I find to be very appealing.

Bali Sunset

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

The South Pacific is supposed to conjure up visions of sunshine, palm trees and water as far as the eye can see. Those visions became reality for me back in 1987, when I captured this sunset on the island of Bali.

Colors on Monday: Green

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

Jen at Unglazed is hosting a mini meme, Colors on Monday. This week's color is Green.

When I think of 'green' I think of the Spring grass in our lawn, the new leaves coming out on the trees and the spring flowers growing in our flower beds.

The terraces of Bali showed different shades of green. (The picture above was scanned from a slide.)

But my favorite green is the green socks Betsy wore on our first visit to Fall Creek Falls when we were first dating back in 2001.

A Tropical Paradise

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

In 1987 I was able to spend a few days at a beach-front resort on the island of Bali. As a farm boy from Indiana I was mesmerized by the palm trees, the ocean, and the waves breaking over the reef. It was a few days in a tropical paradise.

On a Bali Beach

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

I was fortunate to be able to spend several days in Bali back in 1987 before heading for China. We stayed at Kunta Beach near the capital. This scene from the beach just seems to say 'South Sea Island Magic'.

Working on Bali

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

This is a drive-by picture taken from a van as we passed some rice paddies on Bali. I was attracted by the boy working with the water buffalo as well as the palm trees surrounding the paddies.

Sailing the South Pacific

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

After our big snow storm and low temperatures I had to find some way to warm up. The scene above was snapped at Kunta Beach Resort on the island of Bali back in June, 1987. I sure would like to be out on that canoe right now.

A Tropical Paradise

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

In 1987 I was fortunate enough to be able to spend several days in Bali. The group I as with stayed at Kunta Beach, which seemed a tropical paradise to this farm boy from Indiana. The picture above looks out to sea from the shore. You can see waves breaking over the reef in the distance.

Pacific Canoe Sailing Home

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

The coloring in this photo isn't the greatest, but I like the subject.

The picture was taken at Kunta Beach on the island of Bali. It was late in the afternoon and a storm was coming up. You can see the waves breaking over the reef in the background as a Pacific canoe hurries to its home.

Bali Rice Paddies

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

I was able to spend several days on the island of Bali in Indonesia in 1987. One of the many memorable things we saw were these terraced rice paddies in the mountainous interior of the island.
