Harrods Department Store, London

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

Harrods Department Store is a London landmark.  The store, often called “The World’s Leading Luxury Department Store”, is in a building which is imposing both day and night.  We explored the first floor of Harrods when we visited our daughter who was studying in London for a semester during her college career.

I got this picture, taken as a slide in 1993, when we walked past Harrods one evening at dusk.  Recently I scanned the slide and cleaned up the image.  This is the result, which I think makes a pretty picture.

Evening Beauty

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

Although its been a couple of years since we’ve been to Mt. Nebo State Park in Arkansas, this photo gives you a pretty good idea why this ranks as one of our favorite places to visit.  The photo was taken behind ‘our’ cabin in the park as the sun was setting.  It’s a breath-taking sight.

Glory!

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

The past few weeks have been a new, and in some cases frightening, experience for most of us.  I hope all of you are staying safe and staying at home as much as possible.  These are anxious times, but they will pass.

In the midst of troubles I feel it helps to remember that there is much goodness and much beauty in the world around us.  The picture above, taken as Betsy and I enjoyed a spectacular sunset at Mount Nebo in Arkansas. shows there is indeed light and beauty in our world.

Sunset at Mormon Row

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

There are many places in Grand Teton National Park from which to enjoy views of the setting sun.  One of our favorite places is Mormon Row.  This photo was taken in the Mormon Row Historical District just after the sun dropped behind the mountains.  It was a magical moment.

Mount Nebo Sunset

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

Although we couldn’t make it to Mount Nebo State Park in Arkansas this year, we still have beautiful memories of the glorious sunsets we enjoy from the back of the cabin we rent each time we go.  This picture was taken February, 2008.

Evening Light in Colorado

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

One of our stopping places during our trip out west last year was Cortez, Colorado.  On our first evening there we walked around the grounds of the motel as the sun was setting, and I captured this view looking toward Monte Verdi in the evening light.

Bali Skies

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

I’ve been taking photos of the sky near sunset for more years than I care to mention.  This image is from a slide made in 1987 on the island of Bali.  An afternoon rain shower had passed over the place we were staying and the sun was beginning to break through the clouds.

Sunset on the Cumberland Plateau

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

Late autumn sunsets can be beautiful here on the Cumberland Plateau.  The bright red glow in the sky to the west appeared after the sun had dropped below the plateau to the west.  God's colors are gorgeous.

This picture, from my archives, was taken on a clear November evening.

November Sunset

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

While I think the skies over the Cumberland Plateau are pretty any time of the year, autumn skies seem to be especially beautiful.  This photo, from my archives, shows a spectacular November sunset.  This is just another reason why we love living in this part of Tennessee.

Mt. Nebo Sunset

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.  Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

This picture shows one of the reasons we keep going back to Mt. Nebo in Arkansas.  I captured the setting sun over the mountains to the west from the back porch of 'our' cabin.  I'm pretty sure we'll be going back again.

Looking the Wrong Way

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it. Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

I know the sun sets in the west, but sometimes a beautiful sky can be seen by turning your back to the setting sun. This photo was taken last month from the road in front of our house by looking east. I think the pastel colors of the sky and clouds ares very beautiful.

Evening Sky in the Glade

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it. Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

Sometimes incorrect camera settings can yield interesting results. I got this photo when trying to capture the evening sky on the edge of the fairway behind our house this past July. I must admit that I really like the colors in this image.

Red Sky at Night

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it. Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

August sunsets in the Glade can be spectacular. I captured this photo of a beautiful red sky from the yard behind our house. I couldn't help but think, "Red sky at night, sailor's (and Tennessean's) delight".

Mount Nebo Sunset

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it. Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

Sunsets on Mount Nebo in Arkansas are often spectacular, which is one reason Betsy and I keep going back there. I went to my archives for this picture of a setting sun taken in March of last year.

A Glorious End to the Day

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it. Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

This picture was taken in December, 2010. Betsy and I had gone to Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina to enjoy the beach and get some good seafood. An advantage to our December beach trip was that we could enjoy the sunset from our room at the inn.

Glade Sunset

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it. Clicking a second time will make it full-sized.)

We often get beautiful, colorful sunsets on the Plateau. An advantage of sunsets this time of the year is that we can watch the sun drop over the horizon without a lot of trees in the way from the 12th tee of the golf course near our home. This picture was taken in late November of this year.

Sunset at the Grand Canyon

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

On our second evening at the Grand Canyon we were able to enjoy a sunset from Mather Point. The light and shadows in the canyon itself were unbelievably beautiful, and the sky turned a beautiful gold-red as the sun sank lower toward the horizon.

Oklahoma Sunset

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

This is another picture I snapped one evening as we were traveling across Oklahoma. The light streaming through the hole in the clouds seemed to be showing us the way.

Western North Carolina Evening Sky

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

I went to my archives for this picture of a sunset sky in the western North Carolina Mountains. The picture was taken from friends' cabin near Otto, North Carolina.

Oklahoma Evening Sky

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

While driving west through Oklahoma on our trip I stopped to get some pictures of the setting sun. I then looked behind me to the east and saw these clouds -- dark at the base, but still lit by sunlight above.
