Imperial Vault of Heaven

(This picture can be enlarged by clicking on it.)

I visited China for the first time in 1987. While in Beijing, our host took us to visit the Temple of Heaven, which was constructed in 1420. One of three major structures in the Temple is the Imperial Vault of Heaven. The Vault of Heaven is made of bricks and timber and is surrounded by white marble railings. The Vault contained a shrine which held the Tablet of the God of Heaven. The Chinese emperor was considered the Son of Heaven.

The picture above was scanned from a slide.

Of course, being so involved with everything Chinese, I just had to cllick on this one! It looks like some intricate paintings under the roof, and the marble railing sounds cool. Wonder what is written on the Tablet Of God?

This is very interesting
Next week I will have a lot of old pictures to show I found in an antique store from I believe around the 1920's era.
I thought they were interesting because I believe they were taken by either a soldier or someone who lived through this. They shots were beginning to fade from the picture so I thought I better copy them in picasa and now they can also be shown easier.
Happy Good Friday:)

Beautiful photo of a beautiful temple.
Thank you for your visit and comment. Yes Bach was the composer who created the real Good Friday atmosphere.

I enjoy your photos from China so much, George. I may never get to see it in person so it's fun to see it through your lens.
